Tighter policing and enforcement measures have driven Thai based illegal traders of tiger skins and bones to attempt to use an unlikely smuggling route - they have turned to the Thai postal service to smuggle their illegal products. Four complete tiger skins and bones worth an estimated £39,000 were seized by the Royal Thai customs this week.

14 Tigers caught on camera!

Camera traps have captured photos of 14 tigers in the Manas National Park. The park spans the border between India and Bhutan at the foothills of the Himalayas. The area scanned was 650km of the protected sanctuary. The 14 tigers captured on film are made up from 7 males and 6 females, with one tigers gender unknown. Four of the tigers are known to the area and were spotted on both sides of the border.

UK Foreign Office Minister Backs Call for Zero Tolerance of Tiger Trade

Tiger campaigners from TigerTime have met with British Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne MP as part of their on going fight to see the trade on tiger parts banned.  The meeting was held at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on Wednesday 21st December.  The meeting occurred as the supporter signature count on the www.bantigertrade.com petition soared past 31,000.  This figure was passed in a little over 30 days.

The Rising Trade from Tiger Farms

Due to the rising demand for tiger parts in traditional Chinese medicine, tiger farms are on the increase in China. Last year, there were an estimated 24 tiger farms in China responsible for breeding around 6,000 tigers in shocking conditions. The tiger farms vary, with some being run like zoos, with gift shops and shows.

Joanna Lumley's Letter in todays Times Letters

In todays Times Newspaper, a letter from Joanna Lumley and David Shepherd was printed to show the failure of the Chinese Government in protecting their wild tigers, while gaining good press for two pandas being sent to Edinburgh Zoo. TigerTime believes this has acted as a smokescreen for their lack of protection for tigers and the tiger farms that are currently taking place in China.

51 known tiger deaths in India this year, so far.

It has been stated that fifty-one tigers have died in different states of India between January and December 5, 2011. A tigress shot dead outside Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Monday is the latest on the list. Figures provided by Wildlife Protection Society of India show that 14 tigers perished in Uttarakhand, the highest in a single state.

Fantastic news! Tiger bone wine auction stopped!

The Chinese Government has stopped an auction of 400 bottles of tiger wine which was planned for this weekend (See previous post on our TigerTime Blog).  Hundreds of Tiger Time supporters responded to the call to email Chinese officials demanding that it be banned.

China Reopens Trade in Tiger Skins
